Heavy Rain Causes Power Outage Due to Cable Trench Infiltration: New Protective Covers Build a " Waterproof Wall " for Urban Power Supplies
08 Feb,2026
Heavy rain caused power outages via cable trench water seepage due to faulty traditional covers; the new composite cable trench covers with waterproof, durable and intelligent features have solved the problems, been widely adopted and become a disaster-resistance standard for power infrastructure.
Last week, a city was hit by a severe rainstorm, which triggered a large-scale power outage on a main road in the old urban area. The outage left 3 surrounding communities and 12 commercial premises paralyzed for as long as 8 hours. Subsequent investigations by maintenance crews revealed that the root cause of the accident was the failure of the sealing on traditional concrete cable trench covers, which allowed rainwater mixed with sediment to flood the trenches and cause a short circuit in the cables. Statistics show that over the past three years, the city has experienced 27 power failures caused by rainwater infiltration into cable trenches during the rainy season, resulting in direct economic losses exceeding 10 million yuan.
" The gaps in traditional covers are useless against heavy rainfall," a person in charge of the Operations and Maintenance Department at the city's power company said frankly. " We invest a lot of manpower in inspections every rainy season, but it still feels like fighting a losing battle."
Shortly after this incident, a high-strength composite cable trench cover was put into use in a renovation project in the city's new urban area, creating a brand-new " Waterproof barrier " for the city's power infrastructure.
This new cover represents a comprehensive upgrade in waterproofing and safety performance:
Superior Sealing:
Featuring an integrated rubber sealing frame and precision locking design, it effectively blocks rainwater infiltration during storms. Tests have shown it can withstand intense rainfall of 300mm/h without leaking.
Exceptional Durability:
Made from high-strength composite materials, it offers twice the impact resistance of traditional covers. It can withstand repeated rolling by heavy vehicles without deformation, and its textured, anti-slip surface significantly reduces the risk of pedestrians slipping on wet days.
Intelligent Operations and Maintenance:
Each cover is embedded with an RFID chip, allowing maintenance personnel to quickly locate and record inspection information via a mobile phone. Combined with its easy-to-open design, thus gas improved fault detection efficiency by 60%.
" Since we installed the new covers, we haven't received a single report of water infiltration this rainy season," said Li, a maintenance engineer responsible for the new urban area. " It not only solved our waterproofing problems but also made our daily maintenance much easier."
Currently, this new type of cover has been widely adopted in municipal roads, industrial parks, and substations across multiple rain-prone cities nationwide, with a total installed area exceeding 20,000 square meters. It has successfully withstood multiple rounds of heavy rainfall this year. Industry experts predict that as extreme weather events become more frequent, these cable trench covers-with their combined waterproofing, anti-slip, and intelligent maintenance features-will become the " standard " for urban power infrastructure to withstand natural disasters.
